About

Dance Major Journal started in 2010 as an extension of a course called “Critical Issues in Dance,” at the University of California, Irvine. The idea was to give dance majors a voice in the larger world, especially when it came to answering people who asked why they would major in dance, or assumed a dance major was “fun” and a lot of “dancing around.” Students wrote persuasive issues about anything they thought needed explaining, and a journalistic style was encouraged. Topics have ranged from studio to stage, from injuries to body image, from personal revelations to aesthetic considerations. Contributors have since expanded to include alumni and dance professionals, with the world of the dance major as the organizing principle. Contributions are welcome from any part of the dance world.
