Who Can Submit
Only manuscripts written while the author is enrolled as an undergraduate at the University of California, Berkeley are eligible for submission to the BERKELEY UNDERGRADUATE JOURNAL. Manuscripts should be submitted no more than a year after the author's graduation. For additional information, please contact the BUJ's staff advisor at mwcr...@berkeley.edu.
How to Submit a Paper to the Berkeley Undergraduate Journal
I. Manuscript Preparation
Deadline:
Although there is a deadline for each semester's issue, posted at http://learning.berkeley.edu/buj/index.html, submissions are also accepted on a rolling basis. Essays that are received after the deadline will automatically be considered for the following semester's issue.
Criteria for Submission:
The Berkeley Undergraduate Journal (BUJ) publishes exemplary essays and research from disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Essays should be well-reasoned and well-supported. All essay genres will be considered. We will, however, not accept fiction, poetry, or creative writing. BUJ does not reprint previously published work (from any source), in whole or in part, under any circumstances.
Format:
Manuscripts must be typed, in 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, preferably double-sided, titled, have numbered pages, and be accompanied by an abstract of 250 words or less and a 150-word "contributor's notes" (academic biographical information). THE PAPERS MUST NOT INCLUDE OTHER IDENTIFYING INFORMATION OR EVALUATIVE COMMENTS (e.g., name, class, professor, school). Papers should range from at least 15 pages to at most 60 pages in length. Slightly longer papers will be considered if they can be shortened in editing.
Citation style should be consistent and stated on the submissions cover sheet. Otherwise submissions should adhere to the Chicago Manual of Style. We recommend that in preparing your manuscript you consult the Chicago Manual or Turabian Manual.
Multiple Submissions:
Multiple submissions are welcome, although only one submission per author will be published in each issue. Authors should send no more than three different manuscripts per selection period; each should be submitted separately.
Simultaneous Submissions:
Simultaneous submissions with other publications are accepted, but discouraged. Please note on submission cover sheet if your manuscript is currently under review by another journal. Authors are to notify BUJ immediately upon manuscript's acceptance elsewhere.
II. Manuscript Submission
Submission to the BUJ is entirely online.
PART 1: ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION
This part is completed through a web application. The online form consists of three sections, the main elements of which are listed below in the order you will encounter them. Preparing these elements in advance will help you fill out the form quickly and easily.
A) Article Submission Agreement
- Email address
- Name of author(s)
- Your institution
- Article title
- Article keywords
- Article subject category
- 150 word bio/acknowledgements/contributor's notes
- 250 word abstract (see above link for guidelines)
- Your manuscript (WITH NO IDENTIFYING INFORMATION OR PAGE NUMBERS) in PDF, Word, or RTF.
B) Confirmation
After you have completed the article submission agreement, input your information, and uploaded/pasted in your documents, you will receive a confirmation e-mail that states you have completed the electronic portion. You must print out one copy of the confirmation e-mail. It will be used for part two of submission. Read on for details.
The on-line form can be accessed by clicking here. You will be prompted to create an account.
III. Selection Process:
Submissions are reviewed anonymously, undergoing a blind review process. Publication of selected papers is conditional and contingent upon editing. Notification of acceptance or rejection will be sent for all submissions (either by mail or e-mail). Please allow at least two months after the submissions deadline before inquiring about acceptance.
Original manuscripts selected for publication in BUJ may be reprinted subsequently in another publication, if BUJ is properly credited.
