Submission Guidelines

How to Submit an Article

  1. Make sure your article is in an acceptable format. We can accept articles in Microsoft Word. If you use a word-processing program other than Microsoft Word, look for an "export" or "save as" option in your program to save it as an RTF file.
  2. Chicago style formatting is preferred.
  3. Your article should be 5000-8000 words.
  4. Write an abstract for your article. It can be a maximum of 250 words. Please also select keywords. These are words that will help a user locate your article through a search.
  5. Submit your article by clicking the "Submit an Article" button on the sidebar, and follow the directions provided. Alternatively, email your article to Journal@history.ucla.edu. Include in an email message the following things: abstract; keywords; and name, affiliation (department and university), and email address for each author.
  6. If you have any questions, contact Journal@history.ucla.edu.

How to Submit a Book Review

  1. Make sure your book review is in an acceptable format. We can accept book reviews in Microsoft Word. If you use a word-processing program other than Microsoft Word, look for an "export" or "save as" option in your program to save it as an RTF file.
  2. In most cases, your review should examine a single book that has been published recently in any field of history or related disciplines. Your review should be 500-1000 words. You can also submit a book review article that examines three titles of similar theme, methodology, author or field. Book review articles should be 1500-3000 words.
  3. Email the editors at Journal@history.ucla.edu to request a book for review.
  4. Email your book review to Journal@history.ucla.edu. Include in an email message name, affiliation (department and university), and email address for each author.
