Author Guidelines
Description:
The International Journal of Comparative Psychology (IJCP) publishes studies on the evolution and development of animal behavior, including humans. Articles based on experimental or descriptive research procedures, carried out in laboratory, semi-natural, or natural settings, and involving mechanistic, developmental, functional-adaptive, or evolutionary theoretical approaches are welcome. Articles may include a single study or a series of related studies. Papers developing original theoretical models of behavior and substantial reanalysis of published data will also be considered. Articles reviewing the literature in a particular area of research will be occasionally accepted for consideration when the author has demonstrated significant contributions to the topic under review. Short letters to the editor focusing on relevant issues under discussion in the literature or on forgotten issues that deserve renewed attention will be considered. In addition, authors are encouraged to submit audio-visual material both as supplemental material and as stand-alone submissions. Such material needs to provide either educational value (e.g. demonstration of an experimental procedure) or should encourage discussion of critical issues of comparative psychology.
APA Format:
Prepare your manuscripts following APA format. Consult the last edition of the APA Publication Manual (2001). A quick reference to recent changes may be found in the APA web site: http://www.apastyle.org.
Submission:
Manuscripts can should be submitted in APA format (Microsoft Word files, including figures).
Manuscript:
The manuscript should have a cover page with the full title, author(s) name(s), and institutional affiliation(s). Indicate explicitly the name, address, and e-mail address of the author with whom the Editor may correspond concerning the article. Most of the review process is done via the escholarship system or e-mail, so including an e-mail address is of considerable importance.
In a cover letter include the names and e-mail addresses of three (3) potential reviewers for your article. Indicate also whether you prefer anonymity in the review process.
Ethical Issues:
It is recommended that authors follow current APA ethical guidelines (see http://www.apa.org/ethics/code2002.html).
Especially relevant are the guidelines about research and publication, care and use of animals, and treatment of human participants in research. It is expected that researchers comply with these norms independently of, and in addition to, compliance with other regulations enforced locally by governmental agencies.
Accepted Manuscripts:
Upon final acceptance, the author(s) will be required to send a computer file prepared in Microsoft Word. Figures must be prepared in Microsoft Excel or a high resolution JPEG format. Authors will be able to download a PDF file with the final version for electronic distribution of their paper.
Submission Preparation Checklist
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
- The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
- The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or WordPerfect document file format. Figures can be embedded in the main text or submitted as supplementary material.
- The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal (APA style, most importantly).
